Optimizing Complex CAD Data for High-Precision AR Inspection

March 03, 2026

Founded in 2017 as a spin-off of Fraunhofer IGD, Visometry is a German pioneer in industrial Augmented Reality (AR). The company develops enterprise AR solutions designed to support digital transformation initiatives by optimizing processes, reducing costs, and maintaining the highest standards of quality and innovation.

At the center of Visometry’s portfolio is Twyn, a visual inspection solution that runs on iPads and enables intuitive, highly precise quality inspections. Twyn overlays CAD data as a digital specification directly onto physical components, making even the smallest deviations immediately visible. This allows quality assurance teams to perform accurate target-versus-actual comparisons directly in production environments.

Visometry’s customers typically operate in industrial sectors where CAD data represents critical product knowledge across the entire lifecycle, from design and engineering to manufacturing and quality assurance.

The Challenge: Making CAD Work in Real-Time AR

Twyn’s core value lies in precision. However, achieving this level of accuracy in an interactive AR environment presents a significant technical challenge.

CAD models are inherently complex and heavy. They are created for engineering accuracy, not for real-time rendering on mobile devices. In AR-based inspection workflows, performance, stability, and usability are crucial. File sizes must be manageable, rendering must remain smooth, and geometric fidelity must be preserved to ensure reliable visual comparisons.

At the same time, this complexity must remain invisible to the end user. Twyn customers work with CAD data daily, but they are not computer graphics or computer vision specialists. Their focus is inspection and quality assurance, not mesh optimization or rendering constraints.

Visometry needed a solution that could transform complex CAD data into AR-ready assets while preserving geometric precision and ensuring seamless usability.

The Integration: RapidPipeline Inside Twyn Studio

Twyn consists of two applications: Twyn Studio (desktop) and Twyn View (iPad). RapidPipeline is directly integrated into Twyn Studio as a core component of the CAD import module.

When users load CAD data to create inspection projects, RapidPipeline automatically performs the necessary optimization and reduction steps in the background. This ensures that the resulting 3D meshes are lightweight enough for real-time AR rendering while maintaining the geometric accuracy required for detailed inspections.

Where needed, users can adjust essential parameters. In most cases, however, the process runs seamlessly without requiring technical intervention. The result is a stable, consistent pipeline that delivers production-ready 3D data with minimal manual effort.

The Results

After evaluating multiple solutions, Visometry selected RapidPipeline for its robustness, speed, and reliability in production environments. The integration has enabled Twyn to maintain high visual precision while achieving the performance required for interactive AR inspection on mobile devices.

RapidPipeline now plays a key role in Twyn’s data processing workflow, enabling:

  • Reduced and optimized CAD data suitable for real-time AR
  • Excellent rendering performance on iPads
  • Preservation of geometric fidelity for accurate inspection
  • Automated processing that minimizes manual intervention

Most importantly, the integration allows Twyn users to focus entirely on their inspection tasks. The technical complexity of 3D data preparation remains fully abstracted in the background.

Looking Ahead

The collaboration between Visometry and DGG RapidPipeline builds on shared technical roots and a strong commitment to engineering excellence. Beyond the technology itself, Visometry emphasizes the value of responsive support and deep technical expertise throughout the partnership.

With RapidPipeline firmly embedded in Twyn’s workflow, both teams look forward to further strengthening the collaboration and continuing to advance industrial AR solutions that combine precision, performance, and usability at scale.
