RapidPipeline aligned with Khronos 3D Commerce Real-Time Asset Creation Guidelines

October 22, 2020

The Khronos 3D Commerce™ Working Group has published its first deliverable: Guidelines for the creation of real-time assets for e-commerce.

The group’s work is focused on pushing forward industry alignment on the creation, management and display of 3D content for e-commerce, which it does by bringing together over 70 industry-leading technology and retail companies. The newly published guidelines are made for use by 3D artists who are familiar with 3D workflows, but new to the e-commerce industry and the specific requirements regarding cross-platform delivery. With these guidelines at hand, artists will be able to quickly adopt to the retail sector and efficiently author 3D assets and models, independent of the tools they use. Consistency across different platforms is important in e-commerce, as products need to look exactly the same on different applications. Therefore, reliability of deployment for real-time rendering across different platforms is a main objective of the guidelines. Check out the official release post of the Khronos Group for more information.

We are happy to have had the opportunity to contribute to this effort and believe that these kinds of joined-up activities and achievements will support rapid growth in the industry. At DGG, we always aim to create scalable processes. We have aligned the development of our RapidPipeline platform with the Asset Creation Guidelines, so that RapidPipeline users can optimize their 3D assets to match with the official publishing targets fully-automatically, without requiring 3D domain expertise.

If you are interested in checking out the Real-time Asset Creation Guidelines, you can find the published document on their github account. They are ready for use by your team and offer best practices on different topics, including:

  • File formats and asset structure
  • Coordinate systems and scale
  • Geometry
  • UV coordinates
  • Materials and textures
  • Lighting and Rendering
  • Publishing Targets

If you want to become directly involved in the ongoing work of the 3D Commerce Working Group, any company is welcome to join Khronos to have a voice and vote in the evolution of any of its standardization.
