What is the IFC format, and what is it used for?

Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) is an open, standardized digital description of the built environment including buildings and civil infrastructure. Developed by buildingSMART International, IFC is vendor-neutral and provides machine-interpretable information for automation of BIM workflows. It supports various file formats including IFC-SPF (.ifc) text format and IFC-ZIP (.ifczip) compressed format. IFC is an ISO standard (ISO 16739-1:2024) widely used for interoperability between BIM applications and is mandated by many governments for public construction projects. It is a file format mostly used for building information modeling data exchange.

Converting and Optimizing IFC Files

There are various ways to convert between IFC files and other 3D formats. With RapidPipeline, you can easily convert and and optimize IFC files, at scale.
